A container of furniture involves several suppliers, long lead times, fragile goods and a lot of specification detail — sizes, finishes, colours, fittings, packaging. Getting it right is mostly about holding onto that detail at every stage, in person.
Foshan, about an hour from Guangzhou, is one of China’s main centres for furniture, cabinetry, tiles and building materials. It is a normal part of my working week, and it is where most of my furniture projects are made.
What the work actually involves
From renders and BOQs to a purchase list
I work from whatever you have — interior renders, a bill of quantities, a spreadsheet, photographs — and turn it into a list a factory can quote against: dimensions, materials, finishes, quantities.
Samples and finishes before production
Finish and colour are where furniture orders go wrong. I collect samples, photograph them against your spec and get your sign-off before anything goes into production.
Packaging and damage risk
Furniture travels badly when it is packed badly. I check how each supplier packs — corner protection, crating for stone and glass, carton strength — before goods are accepted.
Several suppliers, one container
A fit-out rarely comes from one factory. I collect the orders as they finish, check each against its packing list and combine everything into one shipment.
